Home » Best Euro Kits Ever
Before we get on to the best Euro kits ever, let’s have a quick Euro 2020 update: Wales will play Denmark. England will play Germany. Scotland are out. This time next week, both England and Wales will be learning who they’ll play in the Quarter Finals. Hey, you’ve got to be positive.
It was Father’s Day for us in the UK last weekend and I was gifted the Euro 88 Netherlands shirt. Probably the greatest football shirt ever. As you’ll know if you read my blog or browse my website, I’m massively into all things retro, mainly because designs were just better in the past. This shirt has it all. Crazy design yet essentially just two colours. Big Netherlands logo, tiny Adidas logo. Simple and iconic. I love it.
It got me thinking what the best European Championship shirts of all time were, so I’ve decided to put together my Top 7 (Top Ten’s are overrated). Here goes.
The most recent kit on the list. And, to be honest, it’s only in there by the skin of its teeth. The colour combination on this kit is perfect. There’s something about yellow and blue that ticks all the boxes for me. Also, Sweden played some awesome football in this tournament and that memory association helps make a kit classic.
Class. That good they’ve nodded to it in a few kits they’ve had since, most recently in 2018. Looks a bit like a 1980’s duvet, yet still brilliant.
I loved this kit, I had the 1989 one when I was younger before I even knew what communism was. The badge didn’t last long because I chewed through it (hey, I was a child with an oral fixation). It had foam inside to make it stand proud if I remember correctly. This one is the same design as the Netherlands shirt but still manages to look different due to the ‘CCCP’ text, and you’ve got to admire a national team kit with the countries name splashed all over the front of it.
At this point it’s starting to look like I’m just picking kits with massive badges but it’s not intentional. This shirt is just a masterclass of retro goodness. Amazing.
The oldest kit on this list, and the best England kit ever. I think Admiral were the first company to start making football shirts so they started all of this. Before Admiral, football shirts were just plain old cotton shirts with a badge. The shirt showed a glimpse of what was possible and we should all be forever grateful. I love it.
Yeah, I know they wore this kit in the 1990 World Cup too and there are some bad memories about West Germany from that tournament for a lot of England fans, but you can’t deny that this kit is just beautiful. Such a simple design, yet who would ever have thought of it? It features the German badge emblazoned across the whole front of the shirt but in a unique way. It’s that good nobody has even tried to copy it. And this is because if someone did everybody would just think of this kit. Completely original, never copied, truly great.
As mentioned above, definitely the best Euros kit ever, and quite probably THE best kit ever. Just look at it. Beautiful.
Special mentions should go to Italy not being on the list. They always have beautiful kits and they’re a nation of gorgeous people but they’ve never had a standout kit for me. All of them are good, none of them are great.
Croatia 1996. I’m not having it. It’s not iconic, it looks like a tablecloth.
Germany 1988 Away. Yeah, it’s the same as the USSR and Netherlands ones, but that colour doesn’t work. Rank. And to be fair, the Netherlands away kit (in blue) doesn’t work either, although I can’t find any evidence that they ever actually wore it).
