Popping Lyrics

Sometimes you listen to a song and a lyric just pops out at you. You could have heard the song a million times and know all the lyrics by heart; inside out and back-to-front. And yet one day a song will come on and one lyric in particular will speak to you in a way that you’ve never heard it before. It’s almost like a different voice is singing it.

I don’t know why this happens. Perhaps it’s related to events that are happening in your personal life. Maybe it’s advice or a pep-talk that you really need to hear at that point in your life (I’m not going to tell the story about the time I listened to ‘Roar’ by Katy Perry on the way to a big presentation. It could have something to do with what’s going on in the wider world. Who knows? Hey, I don’t even know if anyone else experiences this. What I do know is that it definitely happens to me.

QuaranTina Turner

The same thing happens to me with books. Obviously, it’s rare that I double- or triple-read books. And yet every now and then, I’ll be reading and ‘BOOM!’, out something pops and I have to stop reading and really think about it. This happens a lot when I’m reading Terry Pratchett. When this happens, I usually make a note on my phone and store it on my ‘Ideas’ list for new MaadWeb designs.

Most times, I have no idea of what I’m going to do with my ideas and it stays on the ‘Ideas’ list – probably for eternity – as the idea is too of the moment. Examples of this being: QuaranTina Turner, Jean Claude Van Tam, and ABBAtar. The book quotes and song lyrics tend to be more timeless, and sometimes the idea is fully formed and I have to drop everything I’m doing and crack on with starting and finishing the design as soon as possible.

Summer Pining

That’s what happened to me this week. I was listening to Bob Marley in the car – as I am wont to do – pining for the hot weather to return, when Get Up, Stand Up came on. Proper song that is – go on, convince me I’m wrong.

Anyway, the lyric that popped out at me was “You can fool some people sometimes, But you can’t fool all the people all the time”. I’m not entirely sure why this jumped out at me. It might have something to do with Christmas parties, it might not.

Paraphrasing Lincoln

Now, Marley was paraphrasing Abraham Lincoln with this quote. The original quote (by Lincoln) was: “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time”. The message is strong. It applies on both a personal level and to a national/international level, and it especially applies right now.

So, my design was conceived, designed, and is now up for sale on the site (or it will be in a few hours). It’s a bit different from my normal style, but it is definitely a style that I want to do more in the future. Also, I’ve decided that A3 is not quite big enough, so I’m upping my largest size to A2. I’ll monitor this going forward, and if there’s enough demand, I might go even bigger. Some people have big blank wall spaces that need filling.

Peace out. Stand up for your rights.
