Kun Aguero

Sergio Kun Aguero

Kun Aguero – Legend. But first, this week has flown by. Filled with Covid-19 booster jabs, unplanned new designs, and learning new songs for the band. It also happens to be the last week that the nippers are at school so I might have to wind down over the next few weeks and do Christmas. I love Christmas, and I’m determined that this one is a good one regardless of what’s going on in the rest of the world.

So, on Wednesday morning I got Moderna’d up. Fully expected to feel rough for a day or two and I did. Surely worth it though to keep us all safe. Do your bit, people.

Maradona’s Grandson

Also, on Wednesday, Sergio Aguero announced his retirement. I’ve always liked Aguero. I absolutely loved Diego Maradona, so when I heard that Manchester City had signed the guy who had married one of Maradona’s daughters, and given him his first grandson, I was interested. Turns out he was one of the best strikers in the world as well.

Aguero gave us one of the Premier League’s finest moments as well. Last game of the 2011/12 season. Manchester City playing QPR and need to match, or better, arch rivals Manchester United result who are playing Sunderland, to win their first ever Premier League title. Now, Manchester United finished 1-0 winners, and, although the matches kicked off at the same time, the City match was still going on thanks to injury time. Dzeko had put an equaliser in in the 92nd minute to make it City 2-2 QPR. It was surely beyond reach.

THAT Goal

The United players are waiting around on the pitch. Waiting for the final whistle to go in the City match so they can celebrate being crowned Premier League champions for the 3,276th (or something) time. It was the 94th minute in the City match. Aguero started a run, got to around 25 yards out, laid it off to Balotelli. Balotelli managed to pass it back to Aguero. A couple of touches, shot, GOAL!

Not only was this one of the greatest Premier League moments ever, and Balotelli’s only (ever?) assist, but it provided one of the most perfect pieces of commentary. It is legendary on its own accord, but married completely to that goal and moment. You can’t see or hear one without thinking about the other. Just perfect.

Retirement

So, when I heard the news about Aguero retiring on doctors orders due to cardiac arrhythmia after joining Barcelona last summer to play with his mate, Lionel Messi, (who left before they even got to play together – but that’s another story), I was reminded of this moment and felt the need to make a new thing.

His last ever goal was in the El Classico. Fair play, Kun. A sad day for football. You’ll be missed.

Today’s boxset – Ready to Mingle – Katherine Ryan dating/deception show. Only started watching it because it was taking up loads of room on my Sky planner. Strangely more-ish.Sergio
